The Importance of Core Strength

When people think about core strength, many typically think about six-packs and washboard abs. Many don’t realize that your abs (AKA rectus abdominis) are just one of many components of your core. Having the lean, six-pack look doesn’t always mean you have excellent core strength. Let’s review the importance of core strength and how to improve every part of your core.

The Muscles of Your Core

Your core is made of the following muscle groups that all need to work together to ensure your body is strong and stable:

  • Erector Spinae – Group of muscles that run up the back from the hips. These muscles can adjust your posture, allowing you to bend forward, backward, or stand up straight.
  • Multifidus – Group of thick muscles that run along the spine that helps keep the spine stable while you move.
  • Obliques – We have internal and external oblique muscles. The outer obliques star midway down your ribcage and stretch to your hips on each side of your body. The internal obliques are underneath the external oblique, allowing you to twist your core and bend side-to-side.
  • Rectus Abdominis – The muscles that people refer to when they mention “abs” that start midway down your ribs and stretch down the front of your body to the pelvic bone.
  • Transverse Abdominis – Covers the front of the body and runs from the rib cage to the pelvis. This muscle allows you to suck your belly button toward your spine.

The Importance of Core Strength

Our core has its name for a reason. Our core forms the foundation for many things involving our physical body and functional movement. While core strength is just one fitness component, it is essential to our overall health and strength. Here are five reasons why core strength is necessary.

Prevent Injury

A strong core acts as a protective mechanism for your spine and surrounding muscles. It helps absorb and distribute the forces generated during physical activities, reducing the likelihood of injuries. A weak core can cause injury in and out of the gym and can happen when trying to hit your PR on a deadlift or moving furniture.

Improve Stability & Balance

Core strength enhances stability by providing a solid foundation for movement. Strong core muscles support spinal alignment, transfer forces efficiently, and improve balance during dynamic activities. Core strength helps you maintain an upright posture, preventing excessive leaning, swaying, or falling during various activities.

Daily Activities Are Easier

Many everyday tasks and sports require stability for proper execution. Whether carrying groceries, playing a sport, or simply getting up from a chair, a strong core provides the stability needed to perform these activities quickly and confidently. This is especially important as we age, as some of these activities can become more complicated, so practice core strengthening throughout your entire lifetime to physically move better throughout the day.

Improve Posture

To have a good posture, muscles in your pelvis, hips, lower back, and abdomen must work together smoothly. When your core is strong, you’re less likely to slump or slouch, which can strain the spine and surrounding muscles. Good posture enhances stability by optimally aligning the body’s segments to distribute weight and forces.

Pain Management

Back pain, especially in the lower back, affects many people! Our mostly sedentary way of life (sitting in front of computers, slouching on soft couches) contributes to this back pain. Improving core strength can alleviate discomfort. Strong core muscles provide better support for the spine and can reduce pressure on sensitive areas.
